The Triangle and RPT Employment
Research Triangle Park (RTP), which is considered to be the premier research park in the county, just reached a major milestone — the park, and its first resident, RTI International, turned 50 years old, which is an achievement that some of the early naysayers would never have dreamed that would happen.
Over the years, RTP has weathered many economic and business-related storms and has remained a cornerstone for employment in the Triangle.
Although the economic downturn has definitely played a key role in several layoffs announced at RTP companies, the news isn’t completely bleak. That’s because a majority of RTP is located in Durham, which was recently ranked by BusinessWeek as one of the best cities for riding out a recession, thanks to the city’s wealth of employment opportunities at the area’s many hospitals, RTP, and Duke University.
