For top quality healthcare, you have chosen the right place in which to relocate. The Triangle, including the counties of Wake and Johnston, has long been home to some of the most cutting-edge healthcare and research institutions in the country.
In fact, according to the Wake County Economic Development Commission, the physician-to-population ratio in the Triangle is five times the national average.
“The Triangle is home to some of the best medical facilities in the country,” said Robert E. Schaaf, MD, president of Wake Radiology. “Often independent healthcare organizations and regulatory agencies rank Triangle hospitals and providers among the best in the nation in quality and patient safety, and in specialty care for cancer, cardiac, emergency and trauma, rehabilitation and imaging services.”
The three main systems in the area include UNC Health Care, Duke University Medical System, WakeMed and Rex Healthcare. There are also, however, many quality smaller hospitals and facilities that serve both the Southern Wake and Johnston areas. The following are just a few of some of the healthcare options available to you and your family.
Johnston Health
According to hospital officials, Johnston Health is now the new operating name for the Johnston Memorial Hospital Authority.
The facilities the new organization encompasses include: Johnston Medical Center - Smithfield (formerly Johnston Memorial Hospital); Johnston Primary Care Physician Services, Inc. a newly created company to provide you with greater access to primary care physicians; Johnston Specialty Physician Services Inc., a newly created company to provide you with greater access to specialty care physicians; and Johnston Health Enterprises, Inc. a newly created company to provide radiation oncology, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and other health-care services. When it is completed, Johnston Medical Center - Clayton will join the family of companies that make up Johnston Health.
Johnston Health reaches out to the community through satellite facilities across the county, including Johnston Medical Associates Kenly, Cleveland and McGee's Crossroads in Benson; and Summit Surgical Services in Clayton.
Johnston Medical Center - Smithfield
When what was formerly Johnston Memorial Hospital opened in 1951, leaders named it in honor of the men and women who served in World War II. The name change to Johnston Medical Center-Smithfield (JMC) reflects the modern-day corporation as it grows from a single campus into a countywide health care system. A memorial to all war veterans will be included in the construction of the five-story patient tower in Smithfield.
The plan includes a new bed tower with 101 patient rooms, plus renovations to the 57-year-old core building. Aside from patient rooms, the tower will include a new cafeteria, a larger intensive care unit and modern operating rooms. In all, the project will add 150,700 square feet and renovate about 18,500 square feet. Construction is expected to take 18 months. Once the tower is finished, then renovations will begin on the core building.
The hospital is licensed for 155 acute care and 20 behavioral health beds. In August of 2006, the state allotted 24 additional acute beds to JMC for its tower expansion. That’s a total of 199 beds. However, there are plans to move 27 acute beds to the medical center in Clayton. If state regulators approve that request, then JMC will have 174 beds when construction is complete.
JMC offers residents of Johnston County superior medical care, state-of-the-art technology, and a friendly atmosphere. The facility has enjoyed impressive growth over the years, which has driven numerous capital improvement projects. The result is a modern and advanced facility.
One of the relatively new facilities is the Memorial Women’s Pavilion, a birthing center that offers everything an expectant family could desire.
Located on the ground floor of JMC, the pavilion includes four spacious labor and delivery/recovery rooms, which allow patients to labor, deliver, and recover initially after delivery in the comfort and security of a home-like setting. Johnston Medical Center has combined the comfort of a beautifully decorated room with the personalized service of its experienced and compassionate staff. The pavilion also includes a two-bed observation unit, 14 private postpartum beds, and a 14-crib nursery.
Wake Radiology

Our radiologists are all board certified by the American Board of Radiology and their expertise encompasses 11 sub-specialties.
