Healthcare

By now, you probably know firsthand that moving to a new area can be incredibly stressful. Don’t add to what is already an anxious time by failing to research your family’s healthcare options. From large health systems to smaller hospitals and clinics, the Cape Fear area is sure to have a facility that meets your needs.

For those requiring inpatient or outpatient hospital services, New Hanover, Brunswick, and Pender counties all offer exceptional facilities that combine the latest in technology with unparalleled patient care.

New Hanover Regional Medical Center
With a dedicated team of more than 4,400 employees, 565 physicians and 800 volunteers, New Hanover Regional Medical Center (NHRMC) is one of the largest public, not-for-profit healthcare organizations in the Carolinas. New Hanover Regional Medical Center provides more than $83 million a year in uncompensated care, often to those who would not otherwise have access to healthcare.

Its specialty centers and services are comprehensive, including a Level II Trauma Center, a Heart Center, Neurosciences, Orthopedic Services, the Betty H. Cameron Women’s & Children’s Hospital, the Surgical Pavilion, the Zimmer Cancer Center, a Behavioral Health Hospital, Pulmonary Services, Home Care, and diagnostic and rehabilitation locations and services located throughout the area.

NHRMC’s highly trained team of physicians, nurses, therapists and support staff make sure you are in the best hands.

NHRMC’s programs for recruiting and retaining top-level staff help ensure a depth of knowledge and experience throughout the organization. These experienced staff members also mentor and support the development of new staff members so every member of the team is working to the highest standards.

According to its website, NHRMC continues to refine its knowledge of the most advanced technology, keeping abreast on the latest techniques and procedures and adopting those that have proven results. Understanding that technology can make the difference in the accuracy of a diagnosis or the precision of a surgery, NHRMC has invested millions of dollars in sophisticated imaging and surgical equipment.

NHRMC is also a leader in using information technology that allows clinical staff to more rapidly access test results, check the safety of prescriptions, and analyze a patient’s medical history. The professional team at NHRMC has been recognized for outstanding service delivery with countless awards and honors.

A few years back, the American Society of Bariatric Surgery re-designated NHRMC as a Bariatric Center of Excellence, one of only a handful of hospitals nationwide to receive this designation. In addition, Blue Cross/Blue Shield has designated NHRMC as one of 10 Obesity Surgery Centers of Excellence in N.C.

NHRMC’s Zimmer Cancer Center is one of the Cancer Programs approved by the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons.

A multi-campus healthcare system, NHRMC includes the main 17th Street campus, Cape Fear Hospital on Wrightsville Avenue, and the management of Pender Memorial Hospital in Burgaw. With a team-based approach to healthcare, NHRMC offers a variety of healthcare services, technologies, and treatments for patients of all ages.
NHRMC is also considered a model Emergency Management Services system, an Orthopedic Center of Excellence (ranked in the top 10 percent nationally) and has received full accreditation for the next three years by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. NHRMC offers medical care to everyone who needs it, regardless of ability to pay. Its volunteer board of trustees is appointed by New Hanover County Commissioners with representation from Pender County. NHRMC receives no local tax support for its day-to-day operations.

Dosher Memorial Hospital
Located in the quaint, seaside community of Southport, Dosher Memorial Hospital is overseen by a publicly elected Board of Trustees and generously supported by a volunteer force of nearly 200, making it unique in the state of North Carolina.

According to its website, Dosher Memorial Hospital is a Critical Access community hospital with 25 staffed acute care (inpatient) beds and 64 licensed skilled nursing center beds. Named after its chief surgeon Dr. Julius Arthur Dosher, the people of Smithville Township voted to pay a minimal hospital tax to ensure access to quality health care locally.

This community hospital offers many of the same services as its larger counterparts in Wilmington and Myrtle Beach — cardiopulmonary and respiratory therapy, diagnostic imaging, emergency services, surgical services and procedures, and much more. Dosher is proud to combine such cutting-edge technology with efficient, patient-focused care.

Approximately one mile from Cape Fear, the hospital is located in the coastal historic town of Southport, NC in Brunswick County. 2011 marks the hospital’s 81st year of community healthcare.

Recently, Dosher Memorial Hospital announced the opening of a new hospital based primary care practice in Southport to meet the growing needs of the community. The new medical practice, Dosher Medical Associates, will be located at 11 East 9th St., in the medical office part behind Dosher Memorial Hospital. The facility opened in July and is staffed by long-time area physician G. Thomas Holland, MD.

While striving to meet the healthcare needs of area Medicare patients, Dosher Medical Associates will also provide family medicine, including child, adult and senior care for patients with private insurance coverage, as well as those covered by Medicaid. Most insurances are accepted.

Board certified in family medicine, Dr. Holland has been treating families in the community for more than 13 years. Prior to joining Dosher Medical Associates, Dr. Holland provided medical care, along with J. Morgan Todd, MD, at Long Beach Family Medical Center in Oak Island. In addition he serves as the medical director for Dosher Nursing Center. Dr. Todd will continue to provide care to patients at Long Beach Family Medical Center.

Brunswick Novant Medical Center
Brunswick Community Hospital was established in 1977 as an acute care hospital located on Highway 17 in the heart of Brunswick County. In July 2011, the newly finished Brunswick Novant Medical Center opened its doors to the community. With a staff of nearly 100 physicians and specialists, 400 employees and 75 volunteers, the facility offers a full range of healthcare services and is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO).

According to a press release, Brunswick Novant Medical Center, which is a member of the not-for-profit health system Novant Health, features 74 acute care beds, 14 more than the current facility, as well as four observation beds and an additional operating room for five total operating rooms. Services include a 24-hour emergency department, maternity center, intensive and progressive care units, surgical services, and imaging and laboratory services, as well as physical therapy, cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation.

The new Brunswick Novant Medical Center welcomed nearly 5,000 community members at a free sneak preview and ribbon cutting event. Participants had the opportunity to tour the new hospital, meet the staff and see special features.

According to the release, the tour provided the community a chance to become familiar and comfortable with the new facility. Participants received a sneak peek of the hospital’s expanded emergency department, state-of-the-art operating rooms, inviting maternity center and the facility’s all-private patient rooms. Guests also learned more about the new patient-focused amenities, including dining-on-call room service, wireless Internet throughout the facility and extended visiting hours.
