Kearfott Corp. said Friday it will expand its operations in Black Mountain, adding 75 jobs and spending $11.8 million on capital investments over three years.

The Asheville metro’s economy closed out 2013 by adding 3,200 new jobs, mostly in retail and hospitality.

But some experts said a shrinking labor force and a falling unemployment rate pointed to more people simply dropping out of the job hunt rather than finding new jobs.

Buncombe County’s unemployment rate fell to 4.8 percent in December — the lowest rate in 5 1/2 years, according to data released Wednesday by the N.C. Commerce Department. The county’s unemployment stood at 4.6 percent in May 2008, just before the Great Recession began to be felt locally. Read more ›
