The Spartanburg-born BMW X3 Sports Activity Vehicle helped lead the Germany-based automaker’s U.S. sales to a 5.8 percent increase in January.

BMW of North America LLC announced Wednesday the company sold 19,739 vehicles last month, compared to 18,656 vehicles during the same month last year.

X3 sales increased almost 57 percent to 1,687 units in January, compared to 1,075 units a year prior. Read more ›

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- U.S. stocks rallied Friday, as investors cheered a much stronger-than-expected jobs report.
The Dow Jones industrial average gained 157 points, or 1.2%, the S&P 500 added 19 points, or 1.5%, and the Nasdaq composite increased 46 points, or 1.6%.

The rally pushed pushed the Dow, up more than 5% in 2012, to its highest level since May 2008. The Nasdaq, up more than 11% for the year, climbed to its highest level since December 2000. The S&P 500 has gained almost 7% this year, and finished at a six-month high.

The rally was sparked by the Labor Department's monthly jobs report, which showed that the U.S. economy added 243,000 jobs in January, far exceeding expectations. The unemployment rate dropped to 8.3%, the lowest since February 2009. Read more ›

A federal grant is allowing the expansion of a program that provides rural residents with transportation to and from work, according to a news release from the Cumberland County Community Transportation Program.

The grant will let the program increase its services from three to five days, the release said.

The amount of the grant was not given, but the money will help offset a 38 percent decrease in state funding, the release said. Read more ›

Mayor Bill Saffo wants to extend the financial incentives already afforded to large businesses in Wilmington to the smaller sector.

"Small businesses generate the majority of jobs for workers in this country, and we must do everything we can to help those businesses," Saffo said during the annual State of the City address Monday night.

In about a half hour, Saffo praised the city's efforts in 2011 and outlined plans for this year. Read more ›
